PLEASANTON, CA. – Amador Valley (26-7, 14-0 EBAL) wrapped up the East Bay Athletic League with a perfect 14-0 record beating Foothill 25-10, 25-15, 25-23. The last time Amador went undefeated in league was the 1999-2000 season. On Senior Night, the Dons seniors led the way with Grace Vickers tallying 16 kills, Nikki Baker with 8 kills and Jessica Atkins with 4 kills. Senior libero Cassie Hahn had 9 digs. Amador will be losing six seniors at the end of the season. Kaytlin Doherty, Cassie Hahn and Emily Pease are two-year varsity players. Jessica Atkins, Nikki Baker, and Grace Vickers are four-year varsity players. Baker will play at Montana State next year and Vickers will play at Binghamton University, NY next season.
The Dons controlled the first set with junior setter Kelsey Williams, junior opposite Becca Malmrose, junior outside Rachel Kinnard and Atkins serving multiple point service runs. Baker took over late in the set scoring three points in-a-row with a block, a hard kill down the line, and winning a joust at the net to give the Dons a 22-8 lead. Baker also ended the set with a kill.
Foothill took an early 3-0 in the second set, but Amador quickly erased the lead. Vickers and Kinnard combined for a block, then Vickers and Williams blocked the Falcons and Vickers nailed three consecutive kills from the middle to give the Dons a 6-3 lead. But Amador was unable to build a lead and Foothill trailed 15-13 before the Dons made their move. Kinnard had a kill and then went on to serve five points in-a-row to open up a 21-13 lead. Williams finished the set with an ace followed by a Foothill error for the 25-15 win.
The Dons jumped out to a 7-2 lead after freshman Nicole Powers served a five point run. The next server, Williams served another five point run acing the Falcons four times and the Dons looked like they were on their way to another easy win leading 13-3. A Foothill service error gave the Dons match point at 24-15, but the Falcons managed to rally and hold off eight match points, with the crowd growing louder after each point. Amador finally sealed the win after a kill by Kinnard.
The Dons start the North Coast Section Playoffs next week.
